Over at What Do I Know, designer and developer Todd Dominey recently posted about his search for 'cool' office space in the Atlanta area and his visit to a house that had been featured on the cover of Dwell magazine. Yes DWELL magazine. While he was at first excited at the opportunity, once inside he quickly realized that there was much about the house that impractical and cheap.
I'll let you read the whole article but it really underscores a very important point for designers of all flavors, especially web design. If you are going to build something, the cool factor may get you some temporary points and publicity, but the lasting value comes in durability, function, and usability.
Want to deploy Flash 9 SWFs on your site? On our site, Google Analytics statistics show Flash 9 at only 59% of visitors.

That's not quite the 80% we like to see before deploying new technology. But don't worry, Disney's much talked about new Disney.com will help. The 995 pixel wide, media (video) heavy site requires Flash Player 9 to view any content. Users without the latest Flash Player are greeted with this graphic:
haha.nu has posted a collection of images titled “HTML Tags illustrated”. It is a great visual illustration of what each tag means. Also: there happens to be a pool on Flickr for just the same thing titled Visual HTML Jokes.
A coworker sent me a link to day to a site called Roxik.com. It is the personal site of Masayuki Kido, a Japanese Freelance web designer. The site is entirely in Flash and is quite amazing. The skill at action script is very impressive.
What I was most impressed with was his “game” called Pictaps. It is a community animation site that you can draw your own character and then flash will animate the character. In addition, you can look back through older ones and see what other people have done.
Take a look at “PinHead”, my 2 minute creation and then go draw one of your own and post it in the comments!

Ever start a new web project and not know where to start? I can say that I certainly have. Well, I just found this cool new tool called the YUI: CSS Grid Builder that makes that process much easier. Give it a width and then decided how man columns, side bars, etc. You can even add multiple rows that have different columns.
Give it a try as it might even make you want to design a new site!
What is your score from the Guess The Logo test? Mine was amazingly terrible! Have fun!
