Brown on White(board)
Since I don't watch much TV, I have to rely on other sources and the Internet to find out when new interesting ads are running. So tonight I was delighted to read about UPS' new campaign called “Whiteboard”.
At it's heart, the campaign is pretty basic. A man, a white board and a brown dry-erase marker. Yet the execution is just stunning. The ads are directed by Errol Morris, and stars Andy Azula, the creative director for the campaign who does a wonderful job. Each ad as some great simple illustrations that he adds to during the spot. (See also “RSS in Plain English”) In one ad he turns a truck in to a plane. In another, he turns a truck in to a freight-liner. Each ad has some great illustrating and most of them has him ad some little extra bit at the end, like mud flaps on the freighter, or shorts on the UPS deliver person.
Watch the whole set on UPS' press site. Along with this campaign, they have also rolled out a larger site called “The UPS Whiteboard”. Narrated by the same person, the site expands on the whiteboard concept, even allowing you to create a message for your own space on the whiteboard that you can send to a friend. The best part was when I tried to get the guy to write anything with the word 'FedEx' in it.
On the whole, I'm very impressed. The ads are simple, yet very catching and they describe the business in a very easy to understand way without overwhelming the viewer with jargon and technology.
Over at Slate.com, Seth Stevenson points out that the catchy music is by the ironically named “Postal Service”
