AVI Problems with QuickTime Error -2048

We had AVI short video clips created by an ultrasound machine. When trying to open in QuickTime Pro or Final Cut Express HD I would get and error similar to: Alert, QuickTime cannot open the file" "image04.avi" it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048) [ OK ].

I tried everything I could think of. I tried a lot of conversion utilities including VLC with no success. I even asked a friend to try converting the file from Adobe Premier on a PC.

Accidental Solution

A second batch of AVIs produced the same results. So I just happened to try re-saving the files from Windows Media Player and it worked. It's interesting because the 'save as' process box is actually titled 'Copying'.

Problem is with the codec

More than likely the codec of the .avi file was not available on your system. Use a program like GSpot to see what the video container is and whether or not it is installed on your computer.
